Week #5

This week I sat in on the lecture for N4605, Chronic Problems in Pediatrics. I was able to observe a variety of different teaching techniques. The instructor/student interaction was very involved. The instructor made sure to allow adequate time for students to process the information and ask appropriate questions. There was also the use of humor. That seemed to loosen everyone up and personalize the discussion even more. I could definitely see myself using some or all of those techniques, but I would probably limit myself on the humor.

I attended a faculty meeting held at the Houston Campus. That experience gave me an inside look at the different activities taking place at the school that I was not aware of. Some of the infomation was simply need to know, but on the other hand there were some things that needed to be discussed in a forum. The agenda was followed and the meeting was very productive.

I had a really great experience with reviewing the test item analysis for the exam, although I have not taken the Measurement and Assessment course. It really feels great to finally be at this stage in the program. I feel as if everything is finally coming together and making sense.

Kim, you seem to be comparing the online forum versus actually being in class or contact with other people rather than our totally online experience. Others are voicing this also.

Good for you, I can't wait until I start the Practicum, which is in Spring for me. Nothing like getting your feet wet. So if you acutally went to class lecture, then this would technically not be a totally online course. Like to hear more, i.e., how often to you have to go to class, are they all day time classes. Keep us informed. I have taken the Measurement & Assessment it was a good experience, you really get a chance to see how much goes into preparing test. Continued good luck.

Hi Kim I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying your classroom experience in the practicum class. You will enjoy measurement and evaluations next semester. I think you will find it much easier. We are currently reworking test items in that class and it’s not as easy as I thought. You’re also I a position to actually compare totally online and classroom courses simultaneously, what do you think? I will be giving you a call soon.

It sounds like you are having fun and learning a lot at the same time. I hope I have a similar experience when I am enrolled in that class.

It was great to meet you Kim!

You are correct! It was a great experience reviewing the test item analysis for the exam. I always wondered what was done with the comments as no instructor seemed to address any of the issues the class verbalized.

I envy your experiences but take pleasure knowing I will be there next semester!
